India can leverage its solar and storage edge to avoid power shortages: Report
India can avoid imminent power shortages and ensure long-term affordable electricity by leveraging its impressive achievements in low-cost clean energy and storage, according to a new study from the University of California’s India Energy and Climate Center (IECC)

India’s power demand set to surge by 80 GW by 2027; experts recommend 50 GW solar expansion
According to the India Energy and Climate Center (IECC) at the University, peak electricity demand, which reached 250 GW in May 2024 – an increase of 46 GW in just two years – could see and additional rise of 50-80 GW by 2027

India must act now to beat extreme heat
A modified definition of a heatwave to incorporate humidity would be a key first step to correctly quantify the scale of the problem in summer

Get the Heat Index right: an important first step to protect people from heatwaves
As temperature records are broken at breakneck speed, the old ways of protecting our communities are no longer adequate; it is time to strengthen the way we measure, report and deal with heat emergencies

India is at a crossroads.
The Global South is at a crossroads.
The world is at a crossroads.
Crossroads is the India Energy & Climate Center Quarterly Newsletter, where we share the latest news, research and facts about the center

Crossroads 4
Heatwaves in India are starting earlier, lasting longer and getting more intense.
Since May 13, 2024, capital city New Delhi recorded 40 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Between April and June 2024, the country saw around 40,000 suspected cases of heatstroke and dozens of heat-related deaths.

Crossroads 3
India’s energy demand is growing fast. Already the third-largest consumer of electricity, demand in India increased by 7% in 2023 and is likely to average 6% growth year-on-year through 2026. Passenger vehicle sales crossed a record high of 4 million units in 2023, up 8% from previous year. India is the second-largest steel producer in the world, and is set to double production capacity by 2030.

Crossroads 2
Decisions on how to meet the energy growth in India and the developing world over the next decade will shape the trajectory of global carbon emissions, and whether we can keep global warming below 2ºC (or not).
